Defense Against a Front Choke (Two-Handed, Standing)

Pluck and pluck-with-counter — the textbook response to one of the most common assault patterns.

A two-handed standing choke from the front is one of the most common civilian assault patterns. It typically appears in domestic violence, in bar confrontations, and as a precursor to a takedown. Krav Maga teaches a single defense at every level, with refinements added each grading.

The plucking defense

Both hands shoot up the centerline simultaneously and "pluck" the attacker's thumbs off the throat. The pluck is sharp, explosive, and high — not a gentle pull. As the hands clear the choke, the body drops slightly to make the pluck mechanically easier and to load the legs for a counter.

The integrated counter

Beginners learn the pluck first, then add a kick to the groin. Intermediates fire the kick at the same time as the pluck. Advanced students chain: pluck + kick to groin → knee → elbow → push-off and disengage. The full sequence is one retzev — perhaps two seconds end to end.

Why the pluck works

The thumb is the weakest part of a choking grip. Pulling outward on the wrists, or downward on the elbows, fights the strongest part of the attacker's grip. Plucking the thumbs upward and outward attacks the structural weak point and clears the choke faster than any pry.
