Knee Strikes — The Clinch Workhorse

When you're inside punching range and have something to grab, knees end fights faster than fists.

Knee strikes are the dominant tool in the clinch. They generate more force than any hand strike, they're delivered from a structurally strong position, and at clinch range they're geometrically unavoidable.

The two main targets

  • Groin: straight knee up, from a clinch or against a held arm.
  • Head: from a Thai-style plum clinch, with the attacker bent forward — typically after a groin shot has folded him.

Mechanics

The knee drives upward with the hip behind it. The supporting foot pivots so the hip can extend through the target. The striking knee should travel in a straight line — not a circular arc — for maximum power and minimum telegraph. The arms control the attacker's head or shoulders to prevent retreat.

Why Krav Maga prioritizes knees over kicks at close range

Kicks above the knee require space and balance — both of which disappear in a clinch. Knees work without space and reinforce balance instead of compromising it. Krav Maga drills the transition from any clinch position to a series of knee strikes followed by a push-off and disengagement.
